He is one of the main stars of the 20th Images and Words Festival. Carlos Morton, the famous playwright, is already in Toronto and he is ready to share his experience and view of the world with us.
On Saturday 29th, it’s the Canadian Premiere of his play “Johnny Tenorio” at the Arts and Letters Club at
8.00 pm. Before that, Morton will be giving a lecture to those interested in his work.
“It is a great honor to be included in this Festival and I am thrilled to be in attendance”, says Carlos in a small interview that he gave us.
“It’ll be an interesting response (about Johnny Tenorio). My guess is the reaction similar to that of the U.S.A. — what kind of exotic hybrid is this! -
Except that there was no massive historical settlement of Spanish-speaking people in Canada like the French”, thinks the playwright.
However Morton sees one main difference between the American audiences from the Canadian one: “If you take account of the Quebec experience with the French, then I think Canadians will be receptive to other cultures taking root and expressing themselves in their native tongue”
To Morton, the question about the role of the Latinos in Canada is does not make sense anymore because the Latin Community is “an integral part of America, from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska”: “by now, we have become a part of the Northern Landscape”, assures.
Finally, he has a small advice for those latinos interested in doing arts in Canada: “I would advise them to express themselves in the languages they feel most comfortable in and represent better their souls”.
Carlos Morton will be selling his books at the Arts and Letters Club the day of the play.
