At the 22 Festival of Images and Words are super proud of announce the screening of “Violeta se fue a los Cielos” by Andres Wood. The film is based on an eponymous book, a biography, written by Ángel Parra, Violeta’s son. He also colaborated with the movie.
The film was selected as the Chilean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. However, It was awarded the World Cinema Jury Prize (Dramatic) at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
The film offers a multi-faceted and lyrical portrayal of an influential figure in world music and complex cultural icon of Chile’s history. Violeta Parra’s revival of Chilean traditional music galvanized a socially and politically committed pan-Latin American folk music movement, the “nueva canción,” and became a reference for other Latin American artists committed to their national legacies (extracted from Rotten Tomatoes webiste)
